What exactly does a person's 'face' represent?
This question occurred to me when I saw Japanese people who still continue to cover their faces with masks as the pandemic settles down.
For the past three years we have become accustomed to communicating with others in our own way, with masks covering most of our faces except our eyes.
Now we do not feel much inconvenience or discomfort. Nevertheless, it seems to me that living with your face covered by a mask leaves something important behind.
Do you remember what your neighbour looks like?
What is a mask anyway?
Mask means to hide, and the face itself is sometimes referred to as a 'sweet mask', for example. Facial expressions do not necessarily show a person's true feelings, joy, anger or sorrow.
I have known this for a long time. So, in these times, we don't have to check the face of the other person every single time, and it may not be that important.
But at the same time, we are always concerned about the faces of others. That is also true.
What are we trying to read from faces and what role do we assign to them?
In search of answers to these questions, Gallery OUT of PLACE organises a group exhibition titled 'under / over MASK' .
Five artists (painter, photographer, visual artist and musician) who work on the subject of 'face' have been brought together to present their new works on the subject of 'face'.
Each of the five artists has a different motivation and methodology for painting 'faces’,
but it seems that they are not all trying to depict 'faces' as objects of personal emotion (sentimentality, longing, love). What on earth then...

ANONYMAT, organised by Gallery OUT of PLACE, is a regional linked session exhibition that emphasises the artist's character (style, place of production, theme) rather than the artist's name.
It began in autumn 2021 and is held irregularly. This is the fourth time it has been held.
